Take Your Hijab Off Or Quit Boxing: This Teen Boxer Chose To Fight | AJ+

I love boxing and I love my religion. They, they built me. To have somebody try and
take away one of them, like, “You can have one or the other, take your hijab off or quit boxing,” I’m like, this is part of me, like, what if they told you, “Shave your head before you get in the ring”? You’d be like, “No!” My dad is an immigrant
and he was a marine. A couple things I learned from my dad: discipline, loyalty, and not giving up. I started boxing when I was 13. My dad took me to a
boxing gym, and when you walked in, you could hear the bell ring, like, “Ding, ding, ding!” People were yelling and
sweating and working out, and I was like, “This is
amazing, I love this!” I started watching videos,
‘Throw punches like Mike Tyson,’ like, “This is your jab!” My gym is my home, I just, I love working. And my coaches, if they
teach me something, I’m gonna do it, like, a thousand times until I get it perfect. I’m, like, “Let’s do this, let’s go!” I just love it. 2016, I was like, “I’m ready to fight.” So I went to Florida, to
the Sugar Bert tournament, to fight for the championship belt. And everybody there was
super nice, they were like, “I hope you do good,
let me know how you do!” “I’m gonna come watch
your fight tomorrow!” I was so, like, “Ahhh,
it’s finally happening!” I was ready. The day I was scheduled to fight, my coaches wrapped my hands, I had my uniform on, I was wearing this. I went to go get my
gloves, and they were like, “No, you gotta take that off.” Like, the leggings, and
then the long sleeves. And I was like, “No, I
can’t, because my religion”, they were like, “No, you can’t wear that.” And I was like, “I’m not taking it off.” She was like, “Take it off or
I’m gonna cross your name.” I was like, “Then, cross out my name.” She crossed off my name. And they gave the belt to my opponent. All this build-up, and then,
pshh, that’s it, it was done. So, I’m sitting there next to my mom, I was, like, on my phone or something, and this girl comes up and
puts the belt in my lap. She was like, “This is yours,
like, I want you to have it.” “We didn’t get to do
our thing in the ring, and that wasn’t fair,
and I stand with you. I got you, like, let’s
change this rule together.” (cheering and applause) We blew up. Washington Post,
ESPN, National Geographic. [Clip]: “My name is Amaiya Zafar.” The girl who gave me the belt, she got the Musial Award for Sportsmanship. [Clip]: (audience applause) And I started doing interviews and just trying to get the story out there so I can get this rule changed. [Clip]: “Amaiya Zafar is
not pulling any punches” “in her fight for her
first official bout.” April 2017, my coach called
me, “Are you sitting down?” They told me about the rule changing, and I was like, “Can I fight tomorrow?” [Clip]: “16-year-old
Amaiya Zafar will make” “her ring debut tonight.” When I had my first fight, I was like, “This is real”, like, “I’m about to get in the ring!” And there was cameras. [Clip]: (audience cheering) After the second round, my coach said, “Look outside the ring.” And I’m like, “Huh?” Beause they always told me,
“Don’t look outside the ring!” He was like, “Look to your right!” [Clip]: (crowd cheering) I see my sister, I see my dad, I see all my cousins all crying. Then I fought every month after that. [Clip]: “A teenage boxer is
trying to fight her way to” “the highest level of the sport.” I just went back to the
Sugar Bert tournament. [Clip]: (cheering) [Clip]: “We are here with Amaiya Zafar.” “First of all, congratulations” “on your victory, you just won.” I would love to be in the Olympics. Now, there’s nothing holding me back from representing Team USA. I’m boxing. This is it. This is what I’m about to do forever.

  1. If you liked this video, we highly recommend you check out Mustafa Ali's story on how became a WWE wrestling star after ditching his stereotypical Arab costume —> https://youtu.be/yBiRcr0xQ1E

  2. Anyone who says Allah ordered Muslim women to wear the hijab is a full blown idiot

    Narrated `Aisha:

The wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to go to Al-Manasi, a vast open place (near Baqi` at Medina) to answer the call of nature at night. `Umar used to say to the Prophet (ﷺ) "Let your wives be veiled," but Allah's Apostle did not do so. One night Sauda bint Zam`a the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) went out at `Isha' time and she was a tall lady. `Umar addressed her and said, "I have recognized you, O Sauda." He said so, as he desired eagerly that the verses of Al-Hijab (the observing of veils by the Muslim women) may be revealed. So Allah revealed the verses of "Al-Hijab" (A complete body cover excluding the eyes).

    Sahih al-Bukhari 146

This is the verse the hadith is referring to :

O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
So here it is Umar decreed and Allah complied.

Also let me give another example of the order's of Allah aren't necessarily his orders. Take for example Ghilah (cohabitation for a suckling woman) :

Judama daughter of Wahb, sister of Ukkasha (Allah be pleased with her). reported:

I went to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) along with some persons and he was saying: I intended to prohibit cohabitation with the suckling women, but I considered the Greeks and Persians, and saw that they suckle their children and this thing (cohabitation) does not do any harm to them (to the suckling women). Then they asked him about 'azl, whereupon he said. That is the secret (way of) burying alive, and Ubaidullah has made this addition in the hadith transmitted by al-Muqri and that is:" When the one buried alive is asked. (Quran 81:8) "

    Quran 81:8
And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked
So the messenger of Allah says : "I intended to prohibit cohabitation with the suckling women, but I considered the Greeks and Persians, and saw that they suckle their children and this thing (cohabitation) does not do any harm to them (to the suckling women)."

Notice here that the commandment that the messenger of Allah makes is on his own behalf after observing that the practice doesn't necessarily harm women of Greeks and Persians this is his decree based on his own view not a revelation from Allah. So basically every Quran verse doesn't necessarily come from Allah. Keep an open eye for them. This is also augmented by the fact that the rest of the hadith is already a verse in the Quran i.e., opinions of men made their way into the book of Islam.

  3. I dont get this why so called moderate muslims you dont promote muslims or islam probably your dad has killed muslims for sure because he was in crusade army

  4. Wearing hijab cause it's a must for women in Islam. But having a tattoo at the same time which is forbidden in Islam. I just don't get it!!

  5. That woman is a horrible person

  6. I boxed and people cheat. When you're at peak performance anything can be an advantage or disadvantage. Mexicans are the #1 biggest boxing fans and they're very respectful towards other people's religion.

  7. Lets see if it was the opposite and the girl who gave her her belt was in a muslim country amd told her she must wear hijab or disqualified
Will she give her the belt ?? Will u all do all that propaganda and drama?
Sure not ! People are paying alot of money to advertise the hijab and encourage girls to wear it
    Hijab its an oppression
Alot of girls fighting it (iam one of them) i was forced in an indirect way to wear at age 9 and i struggled everyday when i look in the mirror and finally removed it last year at age 25
And alot of girls like me so its not a matter of choice (like u all muslim claim) its not a choice when u let a childe at young ages wear it,a child just copy her parents or peer pressure and society pressure
Muslim all try to act innocent and say its a matter of choice and bla bla bla but its a lie they are advertising themselves and invade the world with hijab!!! Its becoming a political movement and if u study muslim history, you will know what i mean
They all start like this!!! Till know i get bullied and people talk behind my back (muslim/relegiom people) about how bad iam just for showing my hair as if it is a sin so its a corrupted system
Iam.not the only one, alot of girls like me but they never talk or raise there voice
So i agree with the judge who told her to remove her hijab we should never let this religion political movememt increase !!!

  20. Professional boxing is banned in Islam! This is especially true for women who do not belong in the ring! You can support and praise it, but you must first learn what the precept in Islam is about it! Obey the precepts of the faith, for it is necessary to stand before Allah and be responsible for what we have done!

  21. Tip of the wedge… claiming islamophobia when what's behind this is an atempt to have sharia blasphemy laws enforced in non muslim settings. Manipulation of a devious nature.

  22. Dont get raped or you will be called upon to produce 4 male or 8 females to the act of raping, as it says in the Shitty Koran?
