John Cena – Edge and Christian Pod of Awesomeness

John Cena – Edge and Christian Pod of Awesomeness

[Music] you are entering Ian’s seized part of Awesomeness so Birdman I’m a little jet-lagged I’m tired I’ve been up for basically two days at this point and I’m not a pro wrestler anymore so it’s basically what I’m trying to say here I don’t have my Gucci my yerba mate eh cuz they they don’t I am in the number I didn’t bring the Europe I know I had to go through an airport bird I don’t know if you’ve been through TSA lately over some on the boat yes the freight liner will bring me some Europe of odd they I’m sure they have it over here my feathers and just Oh comment way over there you know if I could carry a skid of your Bamonte a with me on a forklift and just pump it up like I was doing like wall push-ups like I’m pumping up before a match you know and trying to get those horseshoes the tries going I would bring pump that and pump that forklift up and bring that your of amante with me everywhere but you still learn to cut out I know I’m here I’m here I’m here Ireland Oh top of the morning to you lady it’s actually very late and I have to get up to go to work at like 4:00 a.m. so I’m I’m in delirious zone and yeah well I think I think before we go any further we should pay our respects to my opinion the greatest manager that ever lived Bobby the brain Heenan who unfortunately passed away this week sad story grew up loving to hate Bobby the brain Heenan in the weasel there was never a guy that was that could just talk the way that he talked a presence like he had just an unbelievable all-around performer the bumps that he took when he was getting beat up just he could do anything he could do it all he was literally the best manager that ever lived in my opinion and yeah heartfelt condolences to his entire family yeah it’s crazy you know I always say best in this type of industry is so subjective but what what I can say is favorite and without a doubt Bobby Heenan was my favorite manager of all time he made Mathilda a superstar like think about that his job was to go out and bump for a bulldog yeah and he bum he’s got a bulldog little house off yeah and but if you go further back his stuff with Nick Bockwinkel and not only was he verbally so funny so smart so quick-witted off-the-cuff but he could work man he could he could just work and just so so heartbroken this week hearing that and and you know just I the the term is thrown around so much but truly just a one-of-a-kind talent and manager because listen again no so yeah our thoughts and vibes to Bobbi’s family and you know and the Bobby you know cuz he’s joking around somewhere up there in the ether there somewhere yes he’s busting somebody’s chops yeah condolences to to Bobby Heenan family and he will be missed and but he will never be forgotten because that’s the imprint that he left on this business yep yep and it wasn’t a weasel print he would let you know that he was brains yeah so pretty pretty a crazy week bird you know yeah I had to leave the girls this week which is always the most difficult and only downside to this job because Beth is in school getting her master’s in clinical psychology so she’s she’s full bore in it so you know I’ll go back and forth as much as I can but man humping on that plane right oh yeah oh yeah it’s so funny fellow like you know you when you’re in the the vortex traveling all the time you don’t even think about it right it just it just what you do it’s almost like you’re on autopilot you just go home pack your bags do what you do the few days you’re home you’re back at it again sometimes even get antsy to get back on the road just because that’s what you’re used to but when you get away from it when you decompress when you put that that uh your suitcase actually away in a closet instead of just the ringing on the larger larger floor taking on your laundry and then refilling it to leave a couple days later you get anxious I get anxious when I leave I was just for a certain amount of time I looks like I don’t know how to pack anymore I don’t know how to pack so it’s just like to say that I’m forgetting something I I had like anxiety me packing this time I was like oh man how do not even so much how do I do this I know how to do it but I don’t want to do it and you know truly you know I want to work and I want to keep doing this creative outlet that I’ve been doing because I feel in turn that makes me a better dad because I still get to be me to not just dad do you know what I mean and I think as parents we all need to continue our outlets and we all need to continue to strengthen the bonds of our relationship with our significant others in order for our children or to get the best version of us and part of that is taking jobs like this but man it was yeah I like I broke out in a bit of a sweat like oh I it was so strange so I’m I’m glad that you said that because it makes me feel like I’m not the only one and I truly know no and I know the time more power to the people the men and women that were able to and are able to to function in the WWE travel schedule and maintain a family I don’t think I would have been able to do it yeah well no you know and that no no I couldn’t have been that’s one of the reasons why we consciously made the decision to wait a little bit later so it’s closer to the end of my career then to the start because I didn’t want to miss anything yeah and it’s a very selfish bubble business when you’re in it and it has to be that way it does and I think it’s not like just like that in wrestling I think of any form of entertainment when you’re basically your own business and you’re going out there and it’s up to you to see how far you go and you I didn’t want to be have those this those selfish thoughts or like no I have to go do this so it was a conscious decision to wait and I think that’s how we looked at it yeah well also had some some Twitter buzzes see here’s the thing here’s here’s what I love about this pod is we get emails throughout the week from people that are that are going through stuff and you know no I’m but but for a second here I want to be serious because I you know we’ve gotten a few emails people that are dealing with issues and you know I just figured we’re doing a pod right and and we are don’t get me wrong but in getting these emails from folks that are saying that us being idiots helps them laughs while they’re going through some issues it kind of brings me back the reminder of why I wrestled in the first place – because when I was a kid wrestling with an outlet to forget about the everyday problems and we’re getting some emails we’re that’s that this is kind of the case for some folks so shout out to you you know who you are you sent us the emails we’re not we’re not gonna say your names because you know that’s your business that’s our business but think we didn’t just we didn’t read them in we did appreciate it yeah so you know who you are out there now well on on to my Twitter tirade real quick real quick is I love the fact that there are outlets where people recap our podcast but inevitably there are going to be things left out of the recap and then you get these foods that send me tweets going actually it was the American IWGP I get it I know listen to the podcast don’t just read the recap listen to what I said I said that Kenny Omega would be the first North American to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom I know six other people have wanted I know six other North Americans have what I get I know all that stuff man all right but but I still love you guys even though I called you squirrel taint and that now needs to be on one of our t-shirts squirrel taint I don’t know why I came out of my head but it did maybe it’s because I was half asleep okay anyway what were you gonna speak in of our our t-shirts in merchandise sales the Rockets trapper strike again huh the did you hear after we gave a glowing endorsement of Shayna Baszler and the work she did at the may on classic she got she got signed to a contract did she and I think that probably had a lot doing yeah I think the strap is uh strike again thus trappers got her to the moon huh well I did not know that because I’ve been in travel so well that’s great congratulations to her that’s that’s awesome she deserves it she totally does she kicked ass and she will continue to do so yeah but maybe they are listening which will be very interesting cordis trappers brethren courtesy of this travels me one thing that we got to get this guy over today hey we’re gonna we’re gonna see what we can do he might need her help he might need her help and I teased massive and it truly is so we haven’t had the tally lately of the gets now Shelton was my get hurricane he came to us so he got us and I you got Daniel Bryan so you know oh I think I’m still a little bit ahead but you brought your game up bird however this week is my get stuck in right your corn hole sideways this one this one this one is all my get this week we have a young kid that we’re gonna try and give him the rockets trappers treatment we got we got John Cena on the show and I didn’t realize he didn’t do these things I just you know and after everything well after you work somebody like 500 times in every match conceivable and you know with food poisoning while you’re trying to hold yourself from crapping as I did against him at certain points you you build a bond in a relationship but I just shot a Texans like hey did you want to do this she’s like absolutely I didn’t realize that he doesn’t do them so pretty cool pretty cool it should be a very very interesting chat you’re thrown out the challenge to me for next week to get somebody that also doesn’t do them the gone pool oh hey strapper never a truce trapper never every once in while I’m giving her but she goes yeah oh yeah I’m going on canadian honest there Air Bud weather’s getting cooler now I have all my tux picked out I’m also you know I appreciate you using two kin stead of toboggan because that is truly a northerner right there it’s not a toboggan a toboggan you get on it on a hill on a toque you wear on your head yeah right so I figured if I start off with two north of the border references I’ll be alright you’re you’re in now buddy you’re in and so here’s one thing I didn’t realize before I just reached out to you randomly to do this I didn’t realize you don’t really do podcasts so you know we appreciate you doing it well they don’t they don’t let me help much man ends up in a cell most of my life staring at padded walls so thanks for giving me someone to talk to you this is great and I’m just gonna sit here and say that I’m pretty sure this is probably more of a favor for her edge than it is for me but appreciate it nonetheless no honestly it’s literally fun to be able to hopefully shoot the breeze about some cool stuff and I honestly thank you for the invite it’s not that I don’t do podcast it’s not that the podcasts are too good for me or anything like that it’s just I very rarely get asked to do a podcast so I’ll fly right I got you man thanks for asking me to be on the show and it was literally like hey man you want to do this yes I would like to do this what would you like to do it well then I screwed everything well United Airlines screwed everything up by canceling my flights when we were supposed to do it so you reshuffle the deck yeah immediately we’re good with it so um yeah again appreciate it but enough of that stuff enough of the blowing the Stork stuff let’s talk formality doc so now a little-known factor maybe it’s not that little-known because I think I said it in my Hall of Fame speech but you and I refer to each other as shoe and the idea behind that is yep working each other was like putting on an old shoe which to me is the equivalent of you see your buddy from high school or you’re best friends with it doesn’t matter if it’s 20 years like put on an old shoe yeah and it’s just it’s always it I wouldn’t say like a like an old shoe and that’s the reference we made but like that pair of shoes that you can’t you don’t ever want to ditch because they just fit your feet and everything’s perfect ever you know you know how it feels it feels right it doesn’t matter how when was the last time you put them on was but like you and I have had the chance to begin in that ring quite quite a few times and we we did it for a long period of time and then we would take a break and do it again and take a break and do it again it seems like every time we would get in there we never missed the step and that’s it that’s a very very rare occurrence usually there’s there’s some sort of gap or it’s you know usually guys don’t work that well together it was a it truly was a pleasure yeah it’s funny too cuz there’s some guys that are you just have that natural chemistry with right then you can’t explain it you don’t know what it is but every time you touch something good happens and there’s even the opposite side of the coin where there’s kind of on paper it should be a good match and it’s sometimes it’s a little bit of a feeling out process to get on the same page with somebody too so it’s nice when you have that when you know that okay no matter what this is this is gonna work no matter what we do and you always look forward to those type of matches right yeah and I also I also look at the fact that damn we we just wrestled a lot so when when they have you do stuff over and over and over again it’s really hard from a creative aspect to try to you know recreate adversity and continuously tell a story between the same characters but man it really we got to wrestle a lot so that means we know we did well a lot so that’s also something that you know we were we were the go-to guys in case they needed something it was kind of call and we’ll be there and what’s interesting about it is you look at it on paper and go okay yeah that’ll be good that’ll be good they’re they’re solid they know what they’re doing they’re pros it’ll be good and but it was more than that and I think we both felt that in there like okay whoa what did we just stumble into here because this was it wasn’t supposed to really go the way it went it was supposed to happen pretty quickly you you probably know more than I do but I think it was it’s kind of supposed to be done at Rumble and then it just like you said it kept circling back and circling back because that initial two weeks or whatever it was like okay there’s some lightning in a bottle here yeah and I think I also think it was it it was a bit of a perfect storm as well because I I know you had certainly been waiting for an opportunity to show what you were made of and I was kind of in the beginning stages of mine so you have these two guys both with something to prove and both kind of give in a scenario where they they both have an understanding of like we’re just kind of trying this and it’s never going to work so and I think like that also III can’t I can’t speak for you but I know for me like I love that challenge and I there’s nothing better than proving somebody wrong when they when they think that it’s not gonna be anything worth anything and uh I just think we were both in a good place to just beat up a good shit sandwich to everybody I don’t mean the fans I don’t mean I mean I mean the bay people yeah decision makers I hope that they watching didn’t he didn’t he said shit and we know that means it wouldn’t be good although do you remember the night and I still swear that your hometown food poisoned me we went up to West Newberry slapped your dad I had some pizza at the pizza joint I hopped on the on the jet down to work you at a house show I I don’t know it was like maybe Richmond Virginia or something and right before went out there was like oh no oh gosh this is not oh yeah yeah I put a little side note in to the folks at the West Newbury Pisa to make sure you’re well taken care and uh it’s tough for me too tough for me to focus on the food poisoning when I should I can’t take my mind off my dad’s performance and I and all that he was he was he was quite quite Ricky of Awesomeness all day he was so stoked he was so excited who had you know that’s slappy you know cuz I I don’t want to lay hands on anybody who yeah I don’t know and I’m like okay sir are you sure about this oh yeah and my my dad like you guys were there for a little bit longer than you should have been because because my dad was was interesting in his performance aspect which was that I love that I still love that he turned he turns immediately into job fabulous which is great yeah Vince goes might need you to do some roving commentary over this live okay okay yeah and that’s that role hedging your bets right there but I love my dad he just he just has a boisterous personality one would say now did you also know this is another little-known fact but for TLC in Toronto your mother my mom and your dad set next to each other they sat together and watched us do that match really I know they were both in the crowd I didn’t know they were sitting next to each they were together and watched and went water boys how crazy is that you know I mean that’s a really cool moment man all right you know I vividly remember the very beginning of that match and just the absolute electricity in the audience and man it was it was just that that was a great time I I you know I know it’s a podcast I don’t want to we’ve already talked called out the decision making Bay I’ll tread lightly over that stuff but I just refer vividly remember as if it was yesterday the beginning of that match and how special it was it was really cool to be a part of was that your first type of like ladder match or TLC match type type of population certainly absolutely certainly of that caliber I may have been in stuff with that sort of obstacle set before but nothing like that nothing like that that was one I remember at the beginning I always you know would pride myself on remaining a heel you know my goal was to have 100 percent of the crowd hate me and that was the beginning of that match I it just it came out you know and the emotion of it and yeah you know the the journey of all of that you could read it on my face and sometimes that was my problem as you could see my emotions on my face usually it worked out good for me that was one instance where it didn’t I was like damn it I know I honestly I think it it’s moments like that you know early on I had similar moments against like a Triple H and and a lot of the guys that I face but it’s moments like that that I think allows that have led to the evolution of the audience being the way it is which is it kind of gives them a little bit more freedom like man I love stuff like that I can’t tell you how much I love stuff like that like um you know it it was awesome it was awesome so much so that I never I know that the golden rule is you get in there and you try the best to do your job but I think when it’s that overwhelming you end up swimming upstream and making it an uninjured and so mad those those rare instances like that one space man I was all in for just going for it and like enjoy the moment let people talk about it afterwards then it would it was it was really really special it it was uh those have some fun fun times fun times for sure oh hey so now one of 10,000 back you back now fast forward a bunch of years to this last year and I shot you attacks as like looks like you found a new shoe because I was watching the series of AJ and I was like whoa alright yes he’s really good yeah it’s really good that’s why I bring that I bring that same thing up just saying the the chemistry that you guys had was very similar to to the the what I’m from what I remember the the matches you had with with edge and you know it’s it’s funny to when for what we’ve talked about on this podcast lots of times where you know people think that you can’t wrestle or that you’re not oh you know he has a couple moves he can trust and to me that’s absurd I always said maybe he’s not the the conventionally like that like the smoothest guy in the ring but he’s really good and see that’s the thing that people don’t get and when you can adapt to you go out the did you find when you were when you have this chance to go out with aj that you had something to prove in that respect to or was it just hey you’re gonna go out and do what you do and no matter who’s across from you uh you know i just think it’s a matter of aj was kind of the culmination for four years we began recruiting very gifted performers in in a physical aspect i think you could probably take the calendar all the way back to like CM Punk with with Punk and Daniel Bryan and then signing a lot of guys from from Ring of Honor or the Indies I think it’s just generally assessing your you’re playing feel like um a match with me against Brock Lesnar or braun strowman isn’t going to be the same as with Kevin Owens or the AJ style right and I just try to do my best to give you know I’m at a point where I do need to showcase my abilities but essentially the the goal is for a guy like AJ to show he can hang with John Cena and to do that he really has to show what he’s made of so no we got to do the best that had showcasing what those guys have and I think you know in terms of like like Brock or or even Roman or Braun that’s it that’s a bit of a different tale because I think the interest is always or is already there but when you you have guys that especially I you know I really loved a chance to be able to showcase guys for essentially the first time like I know Chris works with AJ before but I didn’t think he really got a proper chance he debuted in the Rumble he really didn’t do much and that’s kind of what I based my argument on when we kind of blooded heads a little bit but I really wanted him to be able to showcase what he could do because man he is just super super good and then and a guy like seven was the same thing when he came in and there’s there’s a bunch of those names where were not only do you let these guys talk and let him make a statement and I thought you know any of those guys whether it be punk Ryan and the list goes on and on it was Seth and you know Kevin and AJ and I think it pretty much any of those guys who come from traditional roots of Pro Wrestling who made it to the dance and got a chance to brush up against me I thought they did a great job explaining themselves on the microphone I thought it’s all it’s all been some of their best promo work and it’s uh it’s all been some of their best performance so I don’t know man I just try to I’m I try to beat my best chameleon I can I guess yeah I think it says a lot about the performer that you are that you can adapt to that and like I said it doesn’t it doesn’t necessarily have to always be pretty to be effective or to be great and I think that that’s where people sometimes you know there’s a little bit of the people don’t quite get that from yeah and I mean we all we all gravitate towards towards Pro Wrestling for different reasons some people really it’s it’s like filmmaking you know I’m not too much of a filmmaking junkie I’m not going to go to the movies and watch the cuts and edits are it but I know what I know what I feel a good movie is there are some of us that gravitate towards like you say they’re fan of technical execution I’m I gravitate towards storytelling and getting people interested in the story and then doing the best you can to button up the story when it’s not with with AJ it’s interesting I think with yeh pro-wrestling talk I don’t even know where to go after that with with AJ as you said with Chris I think for him he was so getting his feet wet there you know and because we all know the double W is a different beast New Japan is one thing wrestle Kingdom all of those things in TNA they’re all great stages to make a name for yourself but to truly make an e name for yourself it’s in WWE and there there comes an extra bundle of responsibilities and nerves and and outcomes with that so I think Chris was a great guy for him to start with but he needed to get in there with you once he got his first kind of program under his belt to go okay III can do this yeah and don’t get me wrong I don’t I don’t mean that as a knock on Chris not at all I’ve known Utley one of my fans of all time but I’ll even I’ll even go as far as if they NXT is a different animal because all those all those promotions that you mentioned I’ll include NXT in that in that hole those are people that actively gravitate towards quote-unquote professional wrestling and that’s why certain styles are appreciated and certain performances are appreciated and then you get to WWE and I think that bundle of responsibility you talked about comes with using your skills to also tell those those stories to a general public yeah global math whoo oh man oh I’ll see what’s on WWE tonight I’ll see what’s on Raw on Smackdown tonight it’s not necessarily that that pro wrestling fan who’s going to tune into everything because they love everything and they love everything Pro Wrestling and I think that’s the biggest challenge that a lot of the guys face when they come up even you know they’ll they’ll have sort of the same environment in NXT and then they’ll make it to either raw or Smackdown and they really will have a period of difficult adjustment and sometimes the hard gradient gets upset because they feel they’re not being used right but I’ve seen it a number of times firsthand it is the guy’s inability to grasp really what’s going on and that their audience just got so much bigger and their depth of field got so much longer and they just don’t have they can’t conceptualize it just yet and there are those that don’t ever make it and there are those that eventually shake the cobwebs and move on well you use the analogy of movies and I think of it in terms like this like an NXT and that’s a great point in NXT Ring of Honor those are boutique movies that w/e and this isn’t a knock because i love these movies is an Avenger movie it’s everything is big everything is over-the-top it has to translate to someone possibly 80,000 people away and across the world so it’s a different beast to try and wrap your mind around and we’ve talked about it on the show at first we were watching Nakamura when he first got there were like that’s he’s struggling to find it I think he’s getting there now I think the match with you the match with Randy I was like okay there’s the guy there he is but you could see that struggle initially well I think I think with him and no doubt he’s very skilled and extremely interesting but with a character like him you you eventually need to explain what the interesting is hmm and I I know like he’s diligently working on trying to convey to our audience better a better promos but I love his entrance he’s like I say this to all the guys like no one no one we have for the most part he is bad with a skillset of professional wrestling and everyone now like the bar has been raised so high yeah that I thanks for the for the props Jay but I’m like on the low end of even mediocre when it comes to all these guys because they’re also very gifted and and the women as well like it’s amazing what they can do but literally I think the absence of that marquee personality is there’s a giant grand canyon of relationship between superstar and audience and I don’t know who a lot of these guys are yeah I think initially I think I think the allure with Nakamura is he was different and interesting but the longer he stays on television the more he’s gonna have to let the audience or not who he is yeah yes exposes them no and we talked about that before to the how do you how do you elevate yourself even more than they said you really elevate yourself so much in ring there has to be the total package really to break through and and sometimes I think that the performers lose sight of the fact that what’s presented to them is really just the desta template of an outline that they can really take it and make it their own and put it out there and also react to what the crowd is giving them and I think that sometimes that that’s lost that maybe not willing to take a chance when sometimes they should would you agree with that I i 100% agree I think and man this is probably why they don’t let me out of the cage to do podcast you know I’m gonna be wrong from the tallest trees like yeah the amount of complacency is staggering I mean these guys are all so gifted and they’re like there’s never been a better time ever to make a name for yourself in WWE with all of the platforms that we have with raw wood Smackdown with NXT we’re increasing our number of paper views were growing so much content at the network obscene we have so many guys who have so many chances I don’t I just don’t get it I mean you guys you guys certainly know better than I do because I came in on the tail end of life amen everybody’s just gonna have to quit so we even get a chance yeah and I got my chance by mistake and I knew that and like you guys were in the thick of it with rock and Austin taker and triple agent DX and like you the show is so freaking fast that you’re you’re lucky to get out there for a couple seconds and and I think nowadays we have the reverse where the superstars are just in such a well I’m just going to wait to see what they have for me when that’s not what it is I totally agree with that you get a rough outline you get but you care a basic characters get and you get all this freedom to make it your own and I’m not just blowing smoke like in the promos with me enrollment I’m just when I feel something I’m gonna say it and if I react if they react to something I’m gonna I’m gonna poke the bear even more so it’s not it’s not like ah he’s sitting on the tie hill and not practicing money creatures like I’m every single day I go out there and take those chances and and that’s the reason why I got to where I was at at odds it’s the same with you guys like there came a time where you had to just stand up and define yourself and and you guys did very very well at that but nobody nobody that you don’t you know and and I’ve talked about it on this show really to me the the most important thing is establishing a network with Vince a dialog with Vince because otherwise he doesn’t know what he’s investing in the type of person the type of work ethic the type of character and for me what really changed it is it was a week before the money in the bank cash in on you and I talked to him obviously and you know we we had good rapport but I went up to him and I said listen if I cash this thing in and a straight-up match that’s not very he’ll ish I feel like I have to cash it in when the champ is beat down totally expecting that I would still put you over and and you would still overcome but it would be healing you know at least it would get that point across and sure enough from that point forward we now we were spitballing ideas and you know I would go to him with ideas and that is so important I tell anybody who asks me well what do I do when I get there go straight to Vince’s office and knock on his door yes especially if if you don’t and here’s the great thing about Vince he he will explain everything so a lot of guys go down the creative process and they get upset and they just put their head down and they say X Y & Z and that’s that if you’re really that upset go does it go to the person you work for and just simply ask the question why why are we doing this because 99 times out of 100 when when Vince will tell you hey this is the creative ethos behind this thought you walk away going okay that helps me out I can do it yeah and here’s the thing too even if you you go into his office and you know if you haven’t done it before it can be a nerve-wracking thing to go in there and talk to them but even if you go in there to get shot down at least he knows that you care and and like I don’t understand the nerve racking of it all so so the I mean the Titanic is you get fired that’s the worst scenario but I mean we’re we we are we are in the business right now of holding on to a lot of guys so like I said I mean there’s never been a better chance for someone to be a WWE Superstar a WWE megastar and right now like it is wide open throttle wide open foot to the floor like you did you ever thought you could do it step up right now and I don’t know I think I think these guys just feel a piece of the system rather than this creative force that man does you guys both know this there’s not a better feeling than being out there when everything clicks and everything goes right and no one can write that for you no one can produce that for you no one can create that behind the curtain for you that deals with with gut decisions and passion and like your creative has to come from the individual and I’m not I’m not once again I’m not saying that we don’t have great talent as a matter of fact I’ve said that the guys have more talent now than I’ve ever seen I just think it’s the ability to apply creativity to their skill set I think that’s what’s missing I want to circle back to you were talking about Roman and what do you got against Samoans man between the stuff with Ali I learned really early on the two rules were never gonna never drink with us alone because I always drink into the table affirmative and never pick a fight with it would never pick a fight with us alone because you’ll always get your butt whipped but you know if you claim if you claim you’re in the upper echelon you pick a fight with the toughest guy in the bar right that’s pretty much where it is so I’m sitting at home I’m watching these and I’m just like whoa okay now I I’ve met him obviously and I know him but you could feel that he was he was out of his element he was in the deep water and he wasn’t used to it I however think it was his best promo performance because I feel like he tapped into real emotions and I was like oh there it is that’s where he needs to get to every time ever it is that he needs to think about to get there that’s where he needs to be well what did you feel while you’re out there face to face doing that well well you know me dude every time I’m out there is real emotion and and that’s the thing like I I refuse to just read read what someone else thinks I feel like I’d go out there and I like like I said I’m obsessed with the storytelling and you know it’s in a very legitimate sense my biggest hang-up with Roman reigns as the front-runner of the WWE is the fact that he seems to lack in his ability to communicate with me on and that’s not that he can’t because I know Roman he’s like socially he’s a great guy he has a presence and undeniable so I know it’s there just nobody has had it nuts to try to bring it out of them nobody so my job in the WWE is to either be the best or be a vehicle for the best and I was gonna go out there and rip that kid every single week until he said enough and I thought his promo on Monday was really I thought it was like what a Kasparov chessmen speak only what say only what you need to say and let me kind of promo on myself I’m literally on the other side of the phone I have goosebumps and that I know that didn’t come from anyone else but him but he went home was like damn it I’m sick of it yeah I’m gonna I’m gonna stamp it and that right here and he thought of that and it was it was brilliant for the reason that you say because you see it in his eyes that those are his words and that he believes it his final look to the camera the way he mocking and clipping the microphone dude that’s a shot across someone’s bow that’s a real shot and that’s why we watch because although Roman and I may shake hands and play nice behind curtain there is an edge between the two of us of bro I am going to hold on to this as long as I possibly and because I feel you’re not even close to my league and him as a younger talents and who the hell is this guy and why won’t he just go home yeah and there is that that conflict and that friction and it’s a professional a very respectful rivalry but it is a definitive rivalry and it was the same with with me and Dwayne I think it’s been the same with anyone that I’ve ever stepped in there with because we all want to strive to be that number one and and in a locker room that I said is searching for personality I think Roman knows who he is he just doesn’t have everybody every week the tee off on him he was like we kind of matriculated with some really good talkers so you either sink or swim every single epping week there was somebody to knock you down a peg no matter what every week it’s rare that that exists nowadays and I just that I was really trying to do my best to get Roman trained and that was my big criticism if you I mean went along the Samoan tree when I called back the rock and the rock came back I just wanted to rock back and everybody else wanted to rock back I want the rock to do his schtick I wanted the rock to run me now to make fun of me he came off on such a different level that I got a chance to open up on and finally was like enough of it it’s time to bring the rock back and that’s when it’s way back the other way I think Roman has done his best work but I also think toughest task he’s in front of it because he’s gonna have to recreate that passion every single night and that you can you tell them into this by the way yeah well that but that’s my point is is going forward is finding if it’s not you across that ring who’s pushing his buttons it’s finding that place whatever it is that has pissed him off in life and if it’s you and he needs to picture that whatever it is that needs he needs to get there initially and then once you find that pocket man it is so easy to stay in that pocket when you get out there yeah and that’s all like you every everybody’s got their own way of doing it and that’s why I man I so difficult to coach because it is very much like it’s an entertainment performance so everyone has their own methods I I mean my way isn’t going to work for him your way isn’t going to work for him it’s not going to be that simple but you’re right he whatever he had in those weeks building up to all this you have to keep and I think he will be better and better because at the very least not it’s not about speaking clearly not about having great enunciation it is about showing heart out there so when people look at you they’re like that’s my guy or I hate that guy so much I want to see the peak like roundabout way to think I mean you’ve built up a lot of equity you know in yourself in your character in the company like I don’t think there’s anybody than anybody in the history of the company in fact I’m sure of it that’s been on your level for as long as you have and if somebody’s gonna come and take that spot you’re gonna make them take it it’s not gonna be handed to them and was there and that was the entire story with was there a problem yeah that early on that dawned on you and your career will like that hold on a second if I’m gonna be this guy I have to take it nobody’s gonna hand this to me was there it was there one specific moment that happened to you the diplom switch on for you I just the the environment was a little different it was and and I I guess I guess in the in the circumstance my environment was totally different well Roman was brought in so regarded and like a blue chip prospect from then FCW NXT and like everybody knew he was the deal and and in parallel comparison in the OVW class you had blue chip prospect of like Brock Lesnar a Batista Randy Orton I was not among that list so I didn’t yet brought in the same way and I didn’t get the same opportunity and I’m not saying that bad because those three names that I just mentioned Brock Randy and gays are look at the halls those are Hall of Fame yeah so like that I’m not resentful I’m just saying like I found very early on and I think you guys can share this sentiment that either I got to show somebody something or I’m gone yeah you’re gonna have truly friends I think when you’re brought in yes yes and man that takes effort and it you can’t rely on someone saying okay this is what I got to go you have to actively pursue creativity and you have to you have to put in more every day but in the same regard we need those blue chip guys because that’s how we develop future stars it’s just sometimes those guys have such an aura around them that no one nobody pokes the bear nobody nobody brings nobody brings it out and a lot of times when people try to bring it out they can’t get there anyway because the guy knows that he’s a blue chip guy yeah so he’s like I you know I’m good I’m all right it’s funny that you mentioned that that you weren’t considered one of the blue chip guys coming out of the OVW I remember you and I were sitting down overseas on a tour went up breakfast one day and you and I were just shooting the breeze and you would and I had no idea this that this was even the case but you had told me that if when you switched your character doing the the wrapping and stuff I thought if that didn’t work out you were you were gonna be gone I didn’t even realize that it was that that was the case like I didn’t realize that there was that close to you not even having a career in WWE let alone what you’ve done well I see this is and this is what thinks about all this because any time you try to talk to someone about this I like you guys can relate because you lived through it your viable references you know there used to be mass Talent downsizing after WrestleMania or after the holidays every single year that was fact we would bury eyes for a certain amount of time and then at a certain point in years there would be a mass Talent downsizing and we would start again and that’s just the way it was we had so much talent in such little programming we’re always two hours of the pennpoint Smackdown was two hours definitely people like literally you fought for your job every week and if you weren’t entertaining and if you weren’t I fireball it didn’t matter what you look like we have some guys who look like Superman the good men yeah and that that was just the way it was because there were so many solid players involved that we didn’t we didn’t need anybody who wasn’t giving their best so literally that everybody talks about like a roofless aggression starred his career man that was my fault and I said this you know in a small group gathering in Australia I missed on that and this that that miss let me know that I would not never get Vince McMahon himself set me up with the words ruthless aggression and as a kid trying to learn pro wrestling I just wanted to go out there and perform well I could have taken those two words and developed an entire character off of the word ruthless and the word aggression and I just bet and in doing so almost got fired and it was absolute chance when when definitely heard me wrapped in the back of the bus she’s like a man would you look you want to do that for Halloween I said absolutely and it just so happened to resonate a case of perfect time but man I like and and I would most likely would have evolved into one of those guys that were to shift my fist in the air saying they never gave me a chance they totally did totally Kurt Angle endorsed me Chris Jericho endorsed me I got an opportunity but I didn’t create a personality off of what I was doing I just went out there and showed my skill it wasn’t enough yeah it goes back to that point where we’re gonna be like long ago program we’re peeling back the layers of the onion here on the the own yome of Pro Wrestling guys thank you for having me in my last podcast ever well yeah Marc Corrado’s gonna be going a heater come on man yeah yeah but no I I think I offer a really different perspective of what we do because I’ve been able to see it for so long and see so many different types of performance and like I stated earlier I wasn’t brought in as the front I was brought in literally as the last pick so when you start from the bottom you earn every single inch and and even at the top I said this a few weeks ago the second you think here you’ve made it you’re over with I attack every day like there’s an army of people on my heels and from a longest time them I mean physically there wasn’t anybody close but that’s irrelevant the second you think you’re on cruise control norm you’re done it’s not ya complaisance as a killer and I just miss I’m sure I wish we just had more of that you know I wish we had more more that attitude well okay now you you rewind back through all of the years and through your throughout your career you’ve worked everyone that there is to work with in the last you know 15 you know odd years except for one you never got in there at a Wrestlemania with taker and that is one that to me always seemed like a no-brainer and I never understood how it didn’t happen and and maybe it does I have no idea where he’s at mentally and physically but how has it not to this point anyway well once again any answer I give is going to be speculative so the answer that I give is this we we have to do the best for Wrestlemania period that event is completely dependent on the fiscal future of the company and every single year there were plans to do the right thing for Wrestlemania and that match was not in the plan and that that’s the best I can say so many guys complain about not being in the last match or in a main event match or or with a certain partner man if it if it was work people you’re comfortable with I would have had another 10,000 matches with you like that that’s the easy at work there’s been difficult part as a professional is is to is to take what they need you to do and make it create and in a dream world what I love to work the Undertaker at WrestleMania that’s any pro-wrestlers dream that’s any WWE superstars dream to work pretty much the maestro on WrestleMania at WrestleMania that’s it but if the if our if our company’s success depends on me doing something else then my job is to do that something else and I think the way that that all that when I died I I don’t have any regrets on the way any of that what I think it was completely put together the right way what I’d love to do it yes but I hope to work to do work so my other point and it goes back to to Wrestlemania when you and and reigns first started you know the promos and everything I was like whoa whoa whoa why now why is this happening now this is mania man and you even said it and I was like yes yes like that I know there has to be reasons I know there’s a bigger picture that I know nothing about but if I’m sitting there just as Here I am I’m Adam the wrestling fan I’m going oh I want to see this at mania man like no Mercy’s great and you know make it great and it’ll make it memorable but it just seems so out of nowhere and then once again I can only speculate on on why it is but and and this is not to take anything away from WrestleMania and because what a what is impressive franchise WrestleMania has become because I mean you can look at the stats with Forbes calling it one of the most fine most profitable franchises the amount of traction it does for the for the network in the company but I think in trying to define what a great consumer experience the network is we are now at the challenge of consistently trying to give our consumer unbelievable matches all the time and I know personally that outside commitments for me doesn’t doesn’t help anything I mean first of all I’m 40 which and not only just 40 40 but been doing this on a televised because at the level for 15 years right and I’ve made a promise to myself that as soon as I get a step slow there I can’t justify performing for the audience because I don’t want to be that person right so I’m not saying I’m not saying I’m there yet but I am saying I’ve had some some talks with myself about that I’m trusting there’s a lot of stuff going on personally for me outside of WWE which I don’t know what else I could possibly do so do you hold out for an event in April and sacrifice these other things that not only could be good for personal development but overall WWE development I would say you take the opportunities and figure all the rest of the stuff out but as far as from from a grand scheme that’s kind of my view from the office is that I don’t know what my future holds it’s a very it’s a very uneasy time for me both from a health perspective and from a career perspective but I think from a grand scheme we’re trying to let people know that then the network always every single event offers unbelievable matchups all the time and and we’ve also been having a lot of great matchups on television as well so and that all all of those are are unexplainable to me because I guess I I have an archaic way of thinking of like television builds the story and the network pay-per-view is the button of the story but we have a lot of things like we have a lot of exciting content on television and every month we have a lot of exciting content on the network and that’s that’s the best I can do in my head to rationalize that did you guys how like I sugar-coated either be an old and stuff in between like I think this is what I want to get back I do there is one question did Jay after you’ve done this question I want to roll back to because I I really want to find this out so go on well I was just gonna say can you confirm or deny that one of these outside projects is Dancing with the Stars and I’m not talking about being a contestant I’m talking about being an actual dancing pro you know I I do have a legitimate two-step to bring able to coach somebody up to death that would be I know I know people would be interested for a week for the for the car-crash aspect of it and then they’d be like oh man okay yeah oh yeah so here’s my question and III feel good and asking this because I had the same conversations with myself and you said you you’ve had these conversations with yourself and and I’ve often wondered you know when I see and this is going back a few years but when I see a guy like Brett Favre and I see him with the pack and he’s doing his thing and then he comes back with the Vikings and he shows that flash where he Chuck’s that 50-yarder last second gets that touchdown but those flashes were far fewer between now do you feel that you can honestly look at it and go yes it’s time or do you feel like we get clouded our judgment gets clouded because very few of us go out like Shawn Michaels well I I ever I have a different perspective and uh like I said everybody listen to this and you know army strong from the tallest tree but I don’t I don’t see things from from my own looking glass Oh full disclosure if I had nothing going on outside I don’t know physically if I can do a full schedule and if you look at the backlog of superstars before me I don’t think that’s a deterrent anyone who’s staring down the barrel of 41 years old Chris Jericho is the only Cal Ripken I know and then Glen jenkum said the only two Cal Ripken’s I know and and Glen is a big MF and and he does a lot of his work bruising and Chris does take a lot of time to perform as a musician so every time he’s booked he shows up and and uh believe it or not the business another one too that doesn’t get hurt and performs all the time but when you look at that time line and I’m just looking at pure numbers when you crack that forty-year-old threshold there is if you can count on one hand guys that continue to work the day-by-day hustle that is at WWE and that that isn’t maybe on even an elite level yeah no that’s being a part of the show that’s not being the show yeah so when when you ask me to the time I think with the the parties and rumblings between myself and Roman it’s the initial response of the audience telling me that it’s time like that like I can’t be I would I would be ignorant if I didn’t yeah I I’ve made my living off of listening to the audience yeah and it’s been 15 years like the the the WWE audience has been the most gracious kind a faithful group of people to me in the world and I know half of them boo me and all that stuff but they’ve continued to show up for so long and I think I’m doing them a disservice by trying to extend it that I mean I’ve already extended it way back so like when when is too much enough and and I don’t I don’t know I don’t know like I I’ve had injuries just like everybody else but like man I know I’m I got miles on it’s been a it’s been a long long long long run no I’m interested like when I when I had to retire like right around 40 I was just about just around 40 and that’s obviously because of the concussion stuff even before that you know my same thing as doing it night night and that overnight overnight or people had been asking me like you know how do you feel and I’m like well honestly when I’m in the ring I feel pretty much as good as I’ve ever felt it’s the before and after that are getting a lot harder and yeah and I think that you ask any athlete or any performer the same thing it’s just you need more time to reach that level where you can perform and you need more time on the back end to recover from your performance yeah and I’m not I mean you’re the headline won’t read John Singer retires I’m far from done and I mean in the heart of hearts WWE is my family I’m I am so blindly loyal to Vince McMahon is ridiculous he’s been a mentor or a father figure a friend like anything you could ever imagine in a human being for him to provide for me I have learned so much from him and will never leave his side when if he needs me for something there but I think it’s at the point where we both have to begin to be choosy about when those asks come because you could end up truly jeopardizing some some long-term effects I mean if the entity wears out that’s not a good thing from a business perspective and if you run into some some health complications that’s also not a good thing so I mean we all go through it and I know I’ve been I’ve been riding an amazing roller coaster for such a long time and by no means am i giving it up but I am saying that with all this stuff that’s happening outside it’s a blessing because I think it greatly increases awareness for the brand if you don’t believe me everybody knows dwayne johnson so that’s step one right there and the fact that WWE is my lifetime home I will continue to beat that drum until it is busted and they ain’t gonna bust any anytime in the near future so regardless of what I end up getting myself into my first and foremost is going to be that I came from WWE I’m a part of the WWE family and I believe it’s the best form of live entertainment around so it sucks to say the people that like ask I’m not gonna be around as much but that’s where Roman has great points like he is in the trenches every day earning it he can’t ever say that I didn’t do that but in the same vein he’s the one doing it now and if he can step up consistently week in and week out and give the same performances that he’s done over the past few weeks then man I I can I can really take an about-face and step away for a little bit but if he can’t then I’ll be back around it’s it’s time it’s actively time for this generation of superstars to step up and claim it it’s fishy it goes back to the conversation we had about the in the beginning about complacency if you if you look at any superstar they always get in there with me and do their best work and I have this notorious crazy reputation for burying guys because they get so lost in the shuffle after they’re done with me I think their perspective is skewed because I bring that out of them whatever it is that they need to find I bring it out and Roman is a great case in point and Roman is on a certain status so he won’t get lost in the shuffle but a lot of these guys that I face are getting a chance to make the name hood himself and after they face me they can’t recapture the energy and that’s why they get lost in the shuffle because it comes from creative inspiration meanwhile I get my next opponent and I’m already thinking of crazy things that I could do or say or act or like and I’m just on to the next one and they just wait for that experience to happen again and it does and and I I just think that’s we just need a little more that some guys to step up and take you know I’ve often said that the key to a great you know worker wrestler whatever term entertainer that you want to put on it is being able to pull people up to your level and not work down to their level do you know what I mean because there’s I’ve seen so many super talented individuals over the years I’m like wow they’re in there with Shawn Michaels they look like a million bucks you put him in there the next week with somebody else and and they might look like ten and you got to be able to look like a million with everybody and make them look like a million and that that is so key and to and I think you look at John story-arc yeah when he started he had the biggest chip on his shoulder wanting to prove to everybody that he was the man that he went out there and busted his ass no matter what the situation so everybody started look at him and then he gets that certain aura about him that like he is the man so when you get paired with Shawn you are on your best and I think the the thing is you like Shawn you have to be your best every night whether it’s with a great opponent or where the bro stick and that’s that’s how careers are made you can never in the you can in this business you guys know you can never ever take a night a minute a second off you always have to be plugged in Sean himself I remember towards the end Sean himself we would sit by the ring at the beginning of the day and he turned and said to me he’s know my kid if you don’t evolve in this business you become a dinosaur and it’s absolutely true you have to it has to be your heart it has to be your wakeup it has to be your go to sleep it has to be every single thing you think about all the time yeah I mean to the point where I mean Adam and I’ve talked about this on the podcast and in previous episodes where the point where we even had a pen and paper beside the bed when we go to sleep at night if you woke up with an idea you want to be able to remember the morning never know yeah yes and some of those late night ideas are just gold yeah yeah and what I’ve well I tell you what man we’ve kept you an hour I I’m pretty sure you got a busy schedule cuz you got like a few things to do uh-huh we don’t we don’t want to keep you any longer we appreciate you doing it great chat it was really fun to catch up and and I also think too for people listening to this they’re gonna get a completely different understanding of your mindset but not only that kind of the inner workings of what the WWE machine is and why things can go a certain way and all the different pieces of the puzzle that need to be looked at from somebody like Vince McMahon’s eyes well here’s here’s I’ll give them the cliff notes because I got two minutes and forty fifty seconds do your job if you’re out there do your job and do it good because for all the layers of quote unquote backstage politics and all the BS that I refuse to believe it if you do your job and you do it well consistently you will get opportunity because as much Hannigan’s as you think are going on behind the curtain there is a guy back there who listens and who understands his consumer and for any knock that’s ever been given on that person he always gravitates towards what works and if you don’t believe me you guys are a perfect example Daniel Bryan is a perfect example the point is if you’re if you’re out there and you’re a performer listening to this podcast so this is only for 250 individuals do your job and do it well and and leave nothing up to chance that’s the thing if you go out there and crush every week you leave nothing up to chance you’ll have a group and say I like the guy you’ll have another group that say I don’t like the guy but you’ll have nobody sitting on their hands or going to get hot dogs and that’s the business for it you tell stories and you get people invested and if you go out every week and you crush then you get a chance and for those guys listening for those 250 that think they’re doing that and they haven’t gotten their chance yet it’s because you’re not doing it and I can’t tell you what the the missing thing is because if I could I’d help everybody I don’t know I don’t know but you’re not doing it and you got to look in the mirror and reevaluate and figure out how can I do it and I think that’s that’s absolutely it and and for the for the world out there that doesn’t fit into that 250 I enjoy talking about our weird methods of mass psychology I love what I love WWE I love it I love the fact that it is the Avengers movie and I love playing my part in the movie and I don’t I don’t know what’s going to happen beyond tomorrow or beyond Sunday but man it’s what uh what uh pleasure it’s been and it’s uh it’s something that you can tell by this hour of conversation I could go for another ten hours and I’m like super super invested in and I you’re right I do have a little bit of a different looking glass that sometimes is a little bit it’s tough for people to understand but hopefully I’ll give a little look into it well dude kill it on Sunday kill it going forward or whatever you’re gonna do you just crushed your damn podcast so never do it won’t ever let me do this again go do your thing man good talking to you thanks John really appreciate it man thank you so much thank you very much [Music] well bird there you have it there’s uh John Cena giving us a completely different take and I think the closest the closest thing you’re gonna get to vince mcmahon’s mindset and what he has to look at in terms of global performance you know from a fiscal monetary standpoint from Quarterly’s from you know stockholders all of the things that that he has to think about and has obviously had these conversations with John that may be the average wrestling fan and I don’t mean that as a derogatory term but the average wrestling fan is just not thinking about not even the average wrestling fan but even the average wrestler I mean they don’t understand I mean I’m talking w/e wrestlers that are currently on the roster don’t understand what it is that that John’s responsibilities are or a guy in his position so I mean yeah I gave us great insight he was an open book can’t thank him enough for the insight that he gave and how honest he was and you know really you know how much he loves the business that he wants others you know he said that he has some some weird the people think that he buries people when all he really wants is to succeed because he wants this to grow because this is his that we do he is his life he said it he came out of his mouth but that’s how he feels he wants it to continue to grow to be bigger and did somebody to take you know step in where where he leaves off well and and in that hole you know I don’t never understood it because if you look at the history okay let’s just say he put over Daniel Bryan’s SummerSlam main event clean all right he’s put over CM Punk clean he’s aged over an aging analyst Kevin Owens now sure did they have three matches and maybe he wins two and the other guy wins once so what the fact that they got in there and they won one clean and they had a series with this guy who has been the flagship for 15 years that in turn makes them if and big if they take it and run from there and I think that was the point that we all brought up and John brought up in that conversation and if people don’t see that to me they just have blinders on you know hate blinders on and they’re not really really thinking about it you know and I think Roman may encounter that same thing going forward you know that that kind of blind oh I’m just not gonna like it because he’s the one that’s forced down our throat when that’s not really the case if you truly sit back and like I said peel back the the onions J the the fleshy aromas that come from the wrestling idea the the hinting notes and and the oaky flavors I don’t know what I’m talking about I’m so tired [Laughter] [Music] maybe I should do this from now on though maybe I should perform the show this way maybe that maybe people will say this was revelatory this was a Jenna’s finest maybe they won’t but well this is the only way to do this this we learned had a real boat yeah and this was well I mean as I said I’ve kayak I’m an avid kayaker but rowing a Viking longship in you know different why it’s different let’s just say that so but I love that about this I love that about this like you see me doing it I’m doing it and that’s I love still finding great challenges at 43 years old to try and bite into again back to the conversation that we had with John and some of the things that he’s going you know for forward and yeah man it’s a it’s a it’s a fun time to be in the WWE you have more platforms more outlets you can be a bigger star more social media falling all that that and now as proven by Twain as proven by Dave and and now John and these guys there’s something to do after and it doesn’t mean that you’re turning your back on wrestling it just means that they’re gonna know hey he came from double W we got to keep checking that out you know so it’s it’s win-win for everybody and without the W e path platform those doors wouldn’t probably open right so it it’s all be thanks to double w those these these other options are happening for for performers yeah and you know and that’s just because of the the global platform Tempe has but wrestling period I think you know whether it’s ring of on or whether it’s TNA I think it Jerome’s people to have the the talent set that they can use going forward to try and do different things if they don’t want to after it just so happens that debit of UE is the global juggernaut that can put those people in front of those millions of eyeballs worldwide that can then in turn segue into something else so because I don’t ever want this show to get painted with the brush that were we’re a WWE show or anything you know we loved a bit of Yui we made our career there you know they’ve been financially very kind to us however neither one of us are contracted WWE so this is truly just us and just it’s us spitballin man man am i did that tangent just now even make any sense er have anything to do is over talk about yeah it made somewhat I mean some people will figure out they let’s do it three or four times if they don’t just really reach out like damn squirrel paint all right Bert well here’s the deal I’m gonna go hop in my bed that has about 18 pillows on it because I thought my pillow with me that I’ve been sleep like four hours so let’s sleep and if you feel he’ll feel someone smacking your ass in the middle at night that’s just it’s just your dream oh I’m gonna slap your ass edge is what I’m saying
